Most people test the button, hear the beep, and assume they’re sorted — but smoke alarms have a shelf life too. 10 years is the standard, regardless of whether the test still works. The sensor inside degrades over time, test button or not.

Found this on a job today - the earth stake was gone. Completely missing.
Earth continuity gets checked after any electrical work for exactly this reason: a wire with nothing to earth into isn’t doing its job, and you’d never know just by looking at your switchboard.
If you ever notice damage near an earth stake outside your home - corrosion, a snapped wire, or like this one, nothing there at all - that’s worth a call to a sparky, not a guess.
